It was in 1991 when McKrae Game founded one of the biggest conversion therapy programs.
After leading the organization for two decades, he finally came out as gay.
Game started Truth Ministry, a faith-based conversion therapy program to change or suppress a person’s LGBTQ+ sexuality through interventions, ministry or counseling. In 2013, the program was renamed as Hope for Wholeness.
20 years after founding the program, Game has now come out as gay. He decided to publicly tell the truth after he was suddenly fired from the organization.
In an interview with the Post and Courier, Game said: “I struggled more so trying to deny [my attraction to men] than being able to accept my attractions and say, ‘I am a gay man.’”
He added: “I was a hot mess for 26 years and I have more peace now than I ever did.”
Games also received counseling when he was young to get rid of his strong attraction to men. He even married a woman to stop his overwhelming feelings.
“When I started truth ministry, I believed the gay community and the world was lying about homosexuality and this whole subject,” he said to the outlet. “I felt like it was this big ruse and there was a lot of deceit. I was trying to tell the truth.
“Now, I think its the complete opposite. I believe ex-gay ministry is a lie; conversion therapy is not just a lie, it’s very harmful,” he added. “[Especially] when it takes it to the point of, ‘You need to change and here’s a curriculum, here’s how you do it, and you haven’t changed yet, keep at it, it’ll happen.”
According to Post and Courier, Game always felt isolated from other boys his age. He then started to enjoy wearing his sister’s clothes but his classmates picked on him, calling him McGay.
Game was 18 when he had his first relationship with a man. He embraced his sexuality and went out to gay clubs and bars. However, he developed debilitating anxiety, mental breakdowns, and insecurities.
“I was having ongoing panic attacks, and I had never experienced that before,” Game told the outlet. “Emotionally, I was freaking out. I was crying. I was internally pained.
“My brain was telling me, ‘You’re going in the wrong direction.’ But my body was telling me otherwise.”
His mother introduced him to a counselor who said he could help him eliminate his attraction to men.
Game married his wife in 1996. They met at a church but he remained attracted to same sex. There were many times he was caught watching gay porn and he admitted to having a relationship with a man during their marriage.
Almost 700,000 LGBTQ+ members in the United States have undergone counseling or conversion therapy treatments.
“Early in my years, I used to get a lot of death threats … a lot of hate mail on a constant, continuous basis,” he expressed. “At the time, I took a level of satisfaction that I was getting all this hate mail, it was kinda proving like I was doing the right thing.”
So in 2017, he decided to cut ties with the program. He decided to come out publicly as gay this year.
“I was a religious zealot that hurt people,” Game explained to Post and Courier. “People said they attempted suicide over me and the things I said to them. People, I know, are in therapy because of me. Why would I want that to continue?”
He added: “So much of it is trying to change people and fix people. It’s a lie and we have harmed generations of people. We’ve done wrong, we need to admit our wrongs, and do what we can do to stop the wrong from continuing to happen.”
