The top legislative committee of China passed a proposal to ban trade and consumption of wild animals.
It is believed the practice started the country’s killer coronavirus outbreak.
According to the newspaper People’s Daily, the passage of the proposal was ‘urgent’ and ‘essential’ in helping China win its war against the deadly virus.
It is believed that coronavirus has been transmitted to humans by wildlife sold as food, such as snakes and bats.
The new law “comprehensively bans the consumption of wild animals” and “will impose heavier punishment” against lawbreakers.
Xinhua news agency also said that the proposal was submitted to the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress.
It said: “It aims to completely ban the eating of wild animals and crack down on illegal wildlife trade.” The report also mentioned that the new law aims to safeguard “public health and ecological security.”
The Standing Committee, responsible for convening the NPC, postponed the annual session because of the epidemic.
Health officials believe coronavirus emerged from a Wuhan market. After the number of cases started to explode across the country, China ordered a temporary ban “until the national epidemic situation is over.”
The virus has taken the lives of at least 2,663 in China and infected more than 77,000, affecting the country’s economy.
China is accused by conservationists of tolerating the use of exotic animals in traditional medicines and trade for consumption.
The country ordered a similar ban after Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) killed hundreds of people but the wildlife trade resumed.
While the exact source of coronavirus is still not confirmed, experts believe it originated in pangolins, bats, or some other mammal.
