A couple who were married for 57 years has died of coronavirus just a day apart.
Maureen Sharp and her husband William got married in 1963 when they were just 17 and celebrated their 57th anniversary on New Year’s Eve.
The childhood sweethearts admitted to the Victoria Hospital in Dunfermline, Fife on April 5 after they contracted the deadly virus.
The couple died just a day apart as Maureen died on April 8 while William died on April 9.
The couple has left behind their two daughters and four grandchildren.
Their 53-year-old daughter, Yvonne, said: “Dad hadn’t been feeling well for about a week, Mum was quicker within a couple of days. They got taken to hospital on Sunday and mum died on April 8 and dad died on April 9, less 24 hours apart.”
‘Dad didn’t have a fever when the ambulance came, Mum did.”
Initially, the doctors thought it was a chest infection but the couple then tested positive for coronavirus and died just a day apart.
Yvonne described her parents as ‘great’ and ‘family-orientated’ who always looked after everyone.
Yvonne said their death is the worst thing ever and the family would do something big for them after the lockdown ends.
She said: “After this is all done we’ve decided that we’re going to have something at the cemetery again and then a big celebration after for them both.”
“They don’t deserve just six people at their funeral. They deserve better than that.”
William, a retired miner, had a lung tumor while Maureen had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
William was an Oakley United supporter. A club member said they are heartbroken after his and his wife’s death as he would come for every match but they won’t see him anymore at any of the matches again.
