‘Queen Of New Orleans’ And Steel Magnolias Star Carol Sutton Died Aged 76


Steel Magnolias star Carol Sutton has passed away on Thursday night while receiving treatment for coronavirus.

The 76-year-old was hospitalized at the Touro Infirmary in New Orleans and has died after battling against Covid-19.

“Carol Sutton was practically the Queen of New Orleans theater, having graced the stages across the city for decades,” Mayor Cantrell wrote in a statement.

“The world may recognize her from her performances in movies and on TV – whether it’s “Treme” or “Claws,” or “Runaway Jury” or “Queen Sugar” – but we will always remember her commanding stage presence, her richly portrayed characters and the warm heart she shared with her fellow cast and crew in productions such as “4000 Miles” and “A Raisin in the Sun.point 485 |

It was in the late 1960s when Sutton started her acting career after she joined the Dashiki Project Theatre.

She performed in many on-stage productions in New Orleans, including A Raisin in the Sun, Native Tongues, and The Last Madam.

David Cuthbert, a retired Times-Picayune critic, said to NOLA.com: “Among actors in New Orleans, there was Carol Sutton – and there was everybody else.

“She opened her mouth, and out came truth. Wherever she was on stage, that was center stage.”
