Temperatures that day rose up to 116F, with KOKI-TV describing it the hottest day of summer so far.

Ben was with his mom Nikki Fields at a local shopping center when he noticed the bad situation. In the parking lot, he saw a toddler trapped in a car.

As temperatures increased, the toddler became agitated and there was no way for him to get some fresh air. According to Fields’ Facebook post, all doors were locked and the car’s windows were rolled up.

Because there were no signs of the toddler’s parents anywhere, the 12-year-old boy knew what he had to do.

While his mother was contacting emergency services, Ben took a ratchet strap from the car and started swinging the metal against the windows. After numerous failed attempts, he moved on to the windshield.

He told KOKI-TV: “I thought it would be a lot easier because it’s bigger.” Ben climbed on top of the car and stomped on the glass with his feet. The glass broke enough to hook it with the ratchet strap.

Then, he managed to pull a part of the windshield out that allowed him to crawl inside. “I put the hook into the windshield, and then pulled it out, and then I unlocked it,” he shared.

He climbed through the open space and was able to get the toddler.

Paramedics and police arrived at the scene and they managed to find the toddler’s mother, who said that when she left the car, another adult had been with the child.

Thanks to Ben’s actions, the toddler is alive and well.

“I’m so proud of him,” his mother told The Western Journal.
