Emily Athey, a student at Pikes Peak Community College in Colorado Springs, is legally blind, making it hard for her to get a job.
The young baker can still see but only a little bit and only at a very close range, making it difficult or impossible for her to do most jobs.
Her condition did not bother Mischa Halberd, the operator and owner of Icing on the Cake bakery in Colorado Springs.
Before landing this ‘sweet’ job, Emily had applied for more than 50 jobs, KKTV reported.
Speaking about Emily’s amazing gift, Halberg told KKTV: “She’s an absolute delight. She’s focused and fun to be around.”
The teen has been working at Icing on the Cake for almost six months now and she managed to learn a lot.
“She has learned how to decorate cupcakes and cookies. She can also make fondant decorations, fill cake and cupcake pans,” the bakery wrote in a Facebook post, adding: “She is a gem and we are proud to have her as apart of our team.”
Within only a few months with the bakery, Emily has already been gaining a lot of social media attention with her astounding skills.
No one could ever guess from the beauty of her cakes and the intricacy of the designs that she was legally blind.
Her mother, Yvonne Athey, is also very proud of her daughter. “I’m one proud maman,” she commented on one of Icing on the Cake’s social media posts.
Emily is just working part time as “she learns like skills for the future,” according to KKTV.
One mother was also touched by the way the bakery treated Emily. Tracy Bules wrote on the company’s page: “As the mom of a deaf blind young adult, I would like to say thank you very much for really being an equal opportunity employer. My son has an IT degree and has looked for work in his field for two years. Will be buying my next cake from you.”
