Six bomb explosions injured at least four people at three different sites in Bangkok as the capital hosted a Southeast Asian security meeting with top diplomats from China, the United States, Russia, and other world powers.
Before 9 am, small explosions were heard at two sites near Bangkok. The third explosion was heard at a government complex hosting ministries.
The blasts wounded four people, according to the Erawan Medical Center. It also added that “none are serious and all are receiving medical attention at hospitals.”
Three of the people wounded were women cleaning the street when a bomb suddenly exploded. Photos showed them getting treatment from emergency services and one was seen being moved into an ambulance.
The other explosion occurred near the 77-storey King Power Mahanakhon building, one of the tallest infrastructure in Bangkok.
According to Police Colonel Kamtorn Uicharoen, six bombs exploded in different sites. They managed to recover one before it blew up.
Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha said: “I would like to condemn those causing the situation which destroys peace and damages the country’s image.
“I have instructed officials to take care of public safety and those affected promptly.”
Officers had found two fake bombs near the meeting venue. The objects prompted a security scare but were immediately deemed harmless.
Two men had been arrested in connection with the two fake bombs.
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and China’s top diplomat Wang Yi are attending the meeting along with other global and regional officials.
