Louise Raguet describes herself as an ‘eco-feminist’ and has been collecting women’s urine from public restrooms to make loaves of bread.

The French baker says she uses the urine to fertilize the wheat that she uses to bake her ‘Goldilocks bread’ or ‘Boucle d’Or.’

Aside from spraying the urine on the wheat, saying it is ‘a great fertilizer.’ She also wants to ‘break taboos over excrement’ and create ‘a sustainable food cycle.’

In a study published by the French Urban Planning Agency, around 29 million loaves of pee-utilizing bread could be made daily. That would help the environment and farmers save 703 tons of nitrogen in artificial fertilizers each day.

“It’s a neglected liquid, usually dismissed as a waste,” Raguet said, adding that urine contains potassium, nitrogen, and other essential nutrients that plants extract from the soil.

She also said that it “should be treated like a gold mine.”

“When you pee in water, treatment plants remove the nutrients,” she explained. “They do not return to the earth. The system is not circular.

“It’s ideal to replace chemical fertilizers and avoid the pollution they cause,” she added.

It is not clear how women’s wee affects the taste of her bread but to ensure its cleanliness, Raguet says she dilutes the liquid 20 times before spraying it to the wheat she used in baking Goldilocks bread.
