S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has announced that over 2,000 illegal immigrants are currently being quarantined by the police due to exhibiting symptoms of contagious diseases such as the mumps, chickenpox, and influenza.
According to CNN, the majority of infected immigrants are being held in detention centers along the U.S. border with Mexico in cities such as Texas and El Paso.
“As of March 7, 2019, there was a total of 2,287 detainees cohorted for exposure to a detainee with a contagious condition,” ICE spokesperson revealed in a recent statement.
“In the past 12 months, there have been health investigations at 51 ICE detention facilities for mumps, chickenpox and influenza, according to ICE. There have been 236 reported cases of mumps, with another 16 suspected cases during this time period,” CNN report contributed to the topic.
Additionally, at least three minors have passed away due to being exposed to life-threatening diseases since November. It is believed that the immigrants contracted and spread diseases to a worrisome extent while on their way from Honduras or Guatemala to the States.
According to the Customs and Border Protection, the officers attempted to provide emergency treatment in several cases but were too late because the diseases already progressed too far.
While the authorities are used to dealing with immigrants who carry diseases such as chickenpox and influenza, CBP and ICE representatives have reported a rise in other infectious diseases such as the mumps in the last year.
The two bodies aim to keep the infected subjects quarantined and prevent them from entering the country and causing an outbreak among the American population.
One of the most serious outbreaks is currently taking place in Texas where hundreds of people have been quarantined for the mumps.
