Many anti-vaxxer pet owners refuse to vaccinate their dogs for potentially life-threatening diseases amid fears it causes autism.
Some owners, who are members of the movement opposed to immunizations, are under the false impression their dogs could develop autism after getting vaccinations.
The new trend that started from the United Kingdom has reached Australia and has seen more and more pet owners choosing different methods of medication.
Sydney veterinarian Dr. Sam Kovac told The Daily Telegraph: “It is increasingly worrying how many people are analyzing and making decisions based on what they can get off YouTube and Google, rather than from peer-reviewed research or legitimate scientific journals.”
He added: “Pet anti-vaxxers are adamant that vaccinations can cause deleterious effects as severe as autism, despite the fact there are no recorded cases of animals with the condition.”
Dr. Kovac also said pet owners who are refusing vaccine treatment for their dogs do not deserve to have animals as pets. The parvovirus infection, for example, is a viral illness that causes bloody diarrhea, weight loss and vomiting in canines.
The virus can be deadly for puppies aged 6 weeks to 6 months. If puppies are left unvaccinated, the mortality rate is over 80 percent.
“There is no holistic alternative to the vaccine… they’re not only exposing their pet to a horrible demise but through their own negligence they are a risk to others in the community,” he added.
Choosing another method of treatment such as home or herbal remedies may come with a huge price tag. Dr. Kovac said owners might have to spend thousands on unconventional treatment while an injection for parvovirus costs as low as $98.
