A man has been facing a series of charges including malicious destruction of property, ethnic intimidation, and weapons offenses after allegedly intimidating a family and shooting at their home.
According to the reports, 24-year-old Michael Frederick Jr. has been suspected of a crime spree after someone had fired a series of shots at the suburban home of Warren-based US Army veterans Eddie and Candace Hall on September 7.
Just days later, the couple found out that their car had been vandalized with the swastika symbol painted onto its side.
Beside the swastika, there was a series of messages including “not welcome,” “get the f*** out,” and “terrorist Black Lives Matter.
”The suspect has also been accused of slashing the tires of the couple’s vehicle and breaking a window of the home by throwing a large stone through it.
A day after the Halls documented the property damage and shared the news on Facebook, someone shot at their window with what appears to be a handgun according to the security footage of one of the neighbors.
As the couple revealed, they were forced to temporarily move out of their house due to fears that the culprit might come back and hurt them.
Following the attacks on the couple’s property, Frederick has been arrested and charged with a series of offenses. According to Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer, the suspect admitted to his crimes and expressed remorse.
During an online court appearance, Frederick allegedly asked the victims to forgive him and insisted his actions were not triggered by the “color of anyone’s skin” but by the Black Lives Matter displayed at the couple’s home.
Responding to the 24-year-old, Judge Michael Chupa, who entered a not guilty plea on behalf of Frederick, said:
“If you have a disagreement with someone about facts, engage them in conversation, try to figure things out. That’s what America is about.
“But using violence, whether motivated by race or politics or hatred or acrimony, I don’t care. That is not what America is about. We have enough problems in this country without people shooting or violence or disruptions or riots or looting or burning over politics.”
Following the arraignment, Frederick has been remanded at Macomb County Jail on a $200,000 bond. In case the bond is posted, the man has been ordered to stay away from Halls and wear a GPS tether.
