Wuhan is planning to conduct tests for coronavirus on the entire population in the Chinese city after new coronavirus cases were reported for the 1st time in weeks.
As per the official notice, the officials have been asked to submit on Tuesday the plans to conduct nucleic acid tests on every resident Wuhan, which has 11 million people.
The notice demanded each district to make arrangements and plans to administer nucleic acid tests on all of the people in its jurisdiction under 10 days. However, when the testing would begin remains unclear.
This plan comes after the Chinese city reported 1st cluster of new coronavirus infections since Wuhan has re-opened after a seventy-six-days lockdown on 8th April. On Sunday and Monday, 6 cases were reported from Dongxihu District, a residential compound.
However, an official from Dongxihu District epidemic prevention & control commanding officer noted that they are yet to receive news about the notice.
According to the chief epidemiologist at the Center For Disease Control & Prevention, China, Wu Zunyou, testing every person living in Wuhan is not necessary.
Wu said that neighborhoods that do not have any cases do not require screening everyone. He added that large-scale screening has to focus on the key jobs as well as other criteria.
Although China has brought the coronavirus under control, it has been on edge for being hit by the second wave as China has lifted restrictions and lockdowns across the nation.
Virus clusters have emerged in recent weeks in Jilin and Heilongjiang, northeastern provinces that border Russia. China has banned most foreigners from entering as the virus is taking hold in other countries.
Wuhan has witnessed 3,869 deaths as per the reports since COVID-19 first emerged in the city in December. It is believed that the virus has jumped to humans from animals at a market selling wildlife in the city.
