Wuhan residents fear they are ‘trapped’ and will get the infection as the government stopped anyone from leaving the city.
Authorities closed public transport systems and tourist attractions in 14 cities to stop the spread of the virus that has infected over 1,200 people and killed at least 40 people.
Disneyland in Shanghai and part of the Great Wall of China were closed to prevent the virus from spreading further. 13 cities are also reported to have followed Wuhan and shut public transport systems and closed roads.
A man, who is not a Chinese citizen but lives in Wuhan, said to MailOnline that people there are ‘trapped’ and he fears they will eventually get the deadly virus if they don’t leave the region.
The man is part of an international community who wants to leave the city before they become infected.
“Due to the recent lock down, we all are trapped now. Several international students and workers have families here. I also have a baby,” he told Mail Online. “The situation is very serious here. If they keep everyone inside Wuhan I am afraid we all shall get infected.”
He added: “People are panicked. It is advised by the government and university authorities not to go out, stay at home and call a hospital in case of having any symptoms.
“Yesterday the government announced the travel ban and, soon after, people rushed to the markets to buy a lot of food for the next several days. Today, almost all the shops are empty and closed.
“I am in contact with a big international community in Wuhan. Everyone is panicked.
“Most of them are trying to contact their countries’ embassies for help… but no significant development has been made yet.
“Everyone is panicked and wants to flee the China and go back to their countries or at least to move to a safer city in China.”
A report warned coronavirus could have infected up to 350,000 people in Wuhan by the end of the month.
Chinese state media reported that there were 1,287 confirmed cases and 41 had passed away in China.
According to scientists, thousands of people might catch the virus without being aware of it, making it very easy to spread.
In the US, another patient from Chicago was diagnosed with coronavirus and 63 other people are being observed.
Nepal also confirmed its first case of the deadly virus, making it the tenth territory outside of China to have the infection.
A fifth patient in Thailand was recently diagnosed and Japan also confirmed its second case.
