A Wall Street Journal writer faces backlash for attacking Jill Biden and calling her kiddo.
In an article published on Friday, 83-year-old Joseph Epstein, an academic and writer, said Mrs. Biden should “think about it and drop the doc” before her name, adding “Dr. Jill Biden sounds and feels fraudulent.”
Dr. Biden, who holds two master’s degrees, was a full-time English professor at Northern Virginia Community College. She also holds a doctorate in education from the University of Delaware.
She will be one of the most-educated presidential spouses in the history of the US when President-elect Joe Biden takes office, according to BBC.
“A wise man once said that no one should call himself ‘Dr’ unless he has delivered a child,” Epstein wrote in his piece ‘Is There a Doctor in the White House? Not if You Need an M.D.’.
“Think about it, Dr Jill, and forthwith drop the doc.”
He concluded: “Forget the small thrill of being Dr Jill, and settle for the larger thrill of living for the next four years in the best public housing in the world as First Lady Jill Biden.”
People were quick to rush to Biden’s defense, with actress Debra Messing writing: “@WSJ Your hatred fro women is showing. What a disgusting display of misogyny. APOL Your hatred for women is showing.”
Meghan McCain, daughter of late senator John McCain, also tweeted: “I am so sick of the way accomplished, educated, successful women like @DrBiden are talked about in the media by misogynistic men. BEYOND SO SICK OF IT.”
President-elect Kamala Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, also responded: “Dr Biden earned her degrees through hard work and pure grit.
She is an inspiration to me, to her students, and to Americans across this country. This story would never have been written about a man.”
