Following the Wednesday assault on the US Capitol, world leaders have reacted to the destruction in different ways.
After the incident that shook the foundations of democracy and took the entire world by surprise, a series of world leaders condemned the violence and the MAGA mob that besieged the Capitol as a joint session of Congress was underway.
Calling the scenes in the Capital of the United States of America “disgraceful,” British Prime Minister Boris Johnson insisted that it is now vital that the transfer of power is “peaceful and orderly” because “the United States stands for democracy around the world”.point 610 | 1
Meanwhile, Canadian Foreign Minister François-Philippe Champagne said: “Canada is deeply shocked by the situation in Washington, D.C. The peaceful transition of power is fundamental to democracy — it must continue and it will. We are following developments closely and our thoughts are with the American people.”
Responding to the violence at the Capitol was also Jens Stoltenberg, the NATO Secretary General, who called the incident “shocking” and called for the outcome of the election to be respected.
“We follow the events in the USA with concern and invite the parties to calmness. We believe that problems will always be solved within law and democracy. As Turkey, we have always been in favor of the law and democracy and we recommend it to everyone,” Turkey’s Parliament Speaker Mustafa Sentop tweeted while the country’s foreign ministry encouraged the US to “overcome this domestic crisis calmly.”
As German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed, she was left feeling “saddened” and “furious” by the riot, whereas she believes Trump was partially to blame for the events that transpired on Wednesday.
“I deeply regret that President Trump has not conceded his defeat, since November and again yesterday. Doubts about the election outcome were stoked and created the atmosphere that made the events of last night possible,” she said.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said: “The rampage at the Capitol yesterday was a disgraceful act and it must be vigorously condemned.”
Sharing words of support with Americans was also Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau who said that “violence will never succeed in overruling the will of the people” and that democracy in the States “must be upheld – and it will be.”
Addressing the chaotic scenes at the Capitol, French President Emmanuel Macron said: “Today France stands strongly, fervently and resolutely with the American people and with all people who want to choose their leaders, determine their own destinies and their own lives through free and democratic elections.
“And we will not yield to the violence of a few individuals who want to challenge that.”
Spanish President Pedro Sanchez added: “I am following with concern the news that are coming from Capitol Hill in Washington. I trust in the strength of America’s democracy. The new Presidency of @JoeBiden will overcome this time of tension, uniting the American people.”
Taking a dig at his country’s adversary, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani appeared to mock the “Western democracy” by calling it fragile.
“What we saw in the United States yesterday evening and today shows above all how fragile and vulnerable Western democracy is,” Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said.
While the Russian president and Kremlin haven’t issued any statements about the riot at the Capitol as of this writing, top Russian lawmaker Konstantin Kosachyov appeared to defend the MAGA mob by saying that “the losing side has more than enough grounds to accuse the winner of falsifications.”
“It is clear that American democracy is limping on both feet,” he said. “I say this without a shadow of gloating. America no longer charts a course and therefore has lost all rights to set it – and even more so to impose it on others.”
While China’s Communist Youth League branded the assault on the Capitol a “beautiful sight,” Global Times, the Chinese newspaper owned by the Chinese Communist Party’s People’s Daily, poked fun at Pelosi and compared the riot to 2019 protests in Hong Kong.
“@SpeakerPelosi once referred to the Hong Kong riots as ‘a beautiful sight to behold’ – It remains yet to be seen whether she will say the same about the recent developments in Capitol Hill,” the China state-affiliated media tweeted.
Meanwhile, an op-ed in Russia’s state-controlled news publication RT appeared to imply that America got what it deserves.
“Do you realize now what you have done? US gets the kind of ‘democracy’ it championed overseas,” the headline of the piece read. “The US denounced as illegitimate the presidential elections in Belarus, Bolivia and Venezuela,” the op-ed added.
