Workers in Thailand have been caught ironing used face masks and selling them again amid coronavirus outbreak.
Cops raided a house in the Saraburi province and found six workers throwing face masks in a washing machine before ironing and reselling them as if they were newly manufactured, according to Coconuts.
Thousands of used face masks were seized and brought to a local health department.
As the killer virus continues to spread around the world, there is a huge demand for face masks. But many experts say that the best way to combat the virus is by washing hands and using rubbing alcohol.
According to Colonel Pairot Trisophon, one of the workers admitted that the used face masks were obtained from an unidentified dealer.
The worker also said that one face mask would sell for $0.05AUD (one Thai Baht) and they could recycle around 300 to 400 masks per day.
Officers are now searching the whereabouts of the homeowner, 47-year-old Jintana Namwichai.
The World Health Organization has advised people to use hand sanitizer or wash their hands with soap and water at least five times a day to protect themselves against coronavirus.
There are over 95,000 cases across the globe, and at least 3,200 people have passed away.
One internet user commented: “There are certain levels of people, in all countries, (including ours) to whom the concept of good hygiene and avoiding infection is completely alien! That’s how these things spread so readily. You just can’t tell them!”
Another wrote: “My neighbours wash their tissue papers and hang them on the washing line.”
A third added: “Note the smoothing iron plugged into the inadequate cable resistant extension cord plus the dog having a snooze next to the open face masks…”
