A 41-year-old care home worker was caught on camera abusing and mocking an 87-year-old man with dementia.
The clip shows Victoria Taylor threatening and taunting the elderly man after he soiled himself.
Michael Pearce, a former businessman described as calm and sweet-natured, was left for 40 long minutes in his feces before Taylor belittled him at Lyndhurst Park care home.
Taylor’s cruel behavior was only discovered after Mr. Pearce’s nephew installed a hidden camera in his room. The video shows how the pensioner, who has vascular dementia, was left in his own excrement for 40 minutes before Taylor and another worker arrived.
“Oh my God. I think we need to take a photo,” Taylor said as she walked into the room. She also turned to the other worker and said: “He’s crying.”
Taylor then told Mr. Pearce to “stop with the stupid noise please” when he mentioned that he was in pain.
“Well I can imagine it is irritating being covered in s***,” Taylor said before calling him a ‘drama queen.’ She also threatened: “You f***ing puke over me mate, I’m telling you.”
When the elderly man was finally cleaned up, he can be heard saying: “I wish I was dead.”
Mr. Pearce’s nephew, Ian Moss, said he was “shocked, disgusted and devastated” after watching the video. “I honestly did not think it would show what it showed. You think everything’s OK, and it really isn’t. Michael is so sweet-natured and calm. It is very upsetting.”
Taylor was dismissed and reported to the Disclosure and Barring Service. The other worker, who was deemed ‘less vocal and proactive’ during the abuse, was then found to have ‘neglected her duty to whistleblow.’
Labor MP Debbie Abrahams of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Dementia said: “The abuse that Mr Pearce went through is absolutely appalling.
“It is a concern that the CQC rated this nursing home as “good” a month prior to this incident. Many people will use this as an assurance of the quality of care they can expect to receive.”
