A Tampon company was slammed online after posting a ‘fact’ about periods on Twitter.
In support of the transgender community, Tampax tweeted that ‘not all people with periods are women,’ adding: ‘Let’s celebrate the diversity of all people who bleed.’
But after posting the tweet, the tampon company faced backlash and criticism from people who accused the company’s owner, Procter & Gamble, of ‘erasing’ women with the advertisement.
One Twitter user replied to Tampax’s post: “And that’s another brand I won’t be buying any longer. Only women have periods. Not all women, but only women.”
Another wrote: “I’m genuinely interested to know who at @Tampax thought it might be a good idea to gamble your entire client base (Biological Women) against this anti-factual and anti-woman, virtue vomit.”
A third added: “I have bene buying your brand for many years. This ad is misogynistic and advocates erasing women. So goodbye 4ever!!! You have lost a client for life because you are defending unscientific and harmful query theory. Ps: Only women. Don’t deny the biologist. postmodernism sucks.”
But many praised the company for showing support to trans community, with one writing: “Thank you for this inclusive campaign and advertisement, it’s beautiful to include everyone. I seriously question the people in this thread who are angry, why are you so bothered about what other people have in their pants and what gender they identify as? Grow up.”
Another wrote: “It’s nice to see inclusivity becoming more commonplace when discussing menstruation, gynaecological health, and pregnancy. Pushback is always inevitable when society progresses, thank you for promoting inclusive language. You’ll weather the storm of coordinated bigots.”
A third said: “I’m a trans man who experienced period for 13 years; thank you!! I may not need your products anymore, but this makes me feel good for everyone who still does.”
