Women are going on a widespread ‘sex strike’ to protest against the passing of the ‘heartbeat’ bill by not having sex at all.
Joining the ranks of Mississippi and Kentucky, Georgia recently banned abortion at six weeks or later after the ‘heartbeat’ bill came to pass.
Following the outlawing of abortion at later stages, outraged protestors, including high-ranking celebrities, suggested that the bill limits women’s rights and takes away “legal control” over their bodies.
One of the activists is actress Alyssa Milano who started the “sex strike” and encouraged women to follow her example.
“Our reproductive rights are being erased,” she wrote on Twitter.
“Until women have legal control over our own bodies we just cannot risk pregnancy. JOIN ME by not having sex until we get bodily autonomy back. I’m calling for a #SexStrike. Pass it on.”
After Milano’s tweet went viral, thousands of people joined the strike.
“Since men want access to my body for their pleasure but I can’t have access to it for my own damn health, I’m going on a #SexStrike,” one person wrote.
Not everyone, however, was thrilled by the actress’s strike and her approach to tackling the matter.
“Abortion isn’t a ‘reproductive right.’ You do not have the right to kill another human being just because it’s dependent on you,” Mindy Robinson said.
“Also, if you stop having sex you won’t get pregnant anyway… That’s how it works if no one has told you yet.”
Monica Schleicher added to the debate by saying:
“You have the legal right (to) control your body – just not to kill the separate body inside of yours. But a ‘sex strike’ is a great idea. I did it until I got married. That meant the 4 children I conceived were all born in a loving, welcoming, secure, committed environment: marriage.”
