A woman was shopping in a Big Apple Whole Foods when she decided to slip items into her bag.
There is no doubt that it was a theft.
She thought she could easily get away with it but someone saw what she did. According to CBS News, a group of police officers then entered the store looking for some snacks.
A security guard called the cops as he wanted the officers to deal with the woman. But what happened next moved everyone.
According to the New York Post, he said: “I saw the woman opened up her bag, and one of the officers looked in the bag. And [the cop] said: ‘I’ll buy your food.’”
He added: “Just really simply and plainly. She was just overwhelmed with gratitude for these officers.”
The thief expected to receive a penalty but the cops’ grace made her break down in tears. She told them she had stolen the food as she was hungry.
The officers, Lt. Sojo and Officers Rivera and Cuevas, did not even deliberate their decision. They simply took some cash out of their pockets so she could have her meal.
“We looked in her bag, and what we saw was containers of food,” Cuevas said. “We didn’t see anything else. It was just a necessity: food.”
Sojo added: “When you look at someone’s face and you notice that they need you, they’re actually hungry, it’s pretty difficult as a human being to walk away from something like that.”
That kind of reaction might seem surprising but Bozymowski said he wasn’t shocked.
“I wasn’t surprised,” he expressed. “I’ve lived in New York 25 years. It was just a really moving moment.”
NYPD Chief Terence Monahan also agreed and praised his men publicly. He wrote on Twitter: “Cops like Lt. Sojo and Officers Cuevas and Rivera of the Strategic Response Group are the kind-hearted cops who quietly do good deeds for New Yorkers in need.”
