A woman got a manicure at the unnamed local nail salon and her fingers were left swollen because of a fungal infection.
Bethany from North Carolina revealed that she got a dip powder manicure at the salon on October 17.
She started having swollen bleeding fingers, with pus leaking from her nails. Bethany visited a doctor, who told her that she dipped her nails into the same powder which was used by other customers before and this is the reason for the fungal infection.
A dip powder manicure is done when a customer chooses a color and then dip their nails into a jar of powder. Speaking to WFMY, Bethany said that one of her fingers was cut by the nail technician accidentally while filing them.
She said: “I noticed about a week later I had a little spots go up [around a few nails] and tried creams over-the-counter and then soaked them in alcohol and peroxide and it just kept getting worse.”
When her nails started to bleed, she went to the doctors who diagnosed her with a fungal infection. Bethany says she will never go to a nail salon again. She said she had a nightmare experience at a Greensboro salon that left her with a fungal infection.
Bacteria remain in the same powder which is used on different customers and salon workers should not use it on on different clients. Nail technicians should divide the powder into a small, clean container for each customer. The left out powder should be thrown away.
Lynda Elliott, executive director of the North Carolina Board of Cosmetic Art Examiners, told the news outlet: “Our rules are very clear indicating once a product has come into contact with the client, it has to be thrown away.”
