A 64-year-old woman was stabbed in a ‘completely random’ attack while she was walking her dogs out in Southern California.
According to KTLA, the horrifying incident occurred at around 7:30 am on Saturday in Riverside’s LA Sierra neighborhood.
Ke Chieh Meng was left bleeding on the ground as she suffered multiple stab wounds. She was rushed to a hospital where she was declared dead.
23-year-old Darlene Stephanie Montoya has been arrested near the scene. Police said that they believe the stabbing incident was not racially motivated.
Speaking to the New York Post, Riverside Police Department spokesperson Ryan Railsback said: “There was nothing to suggest that the victim was attacked due to her ethnicity.”
Montoya has a history of drug use and was described as a ‘transient.’
“We’re going to try to research [the suspect’s] drug-abuse history and her mental-health history,” Railsback said, adding that the investigators are “not closing the door on anything.”
The stabbing incident marked Montoya’s second arrest in less than a week. She was initially detained on March 30 for striking a white woman with a skateboard.
According to the news outlet, she was charged with assault with a deadly weapon in the first attack but was released without bail because of coronavirus restrictions.
After the second incident, Montoya was taken into the Robert Presley Detention Center on suspicion of murder, being under the influence of drugs, and a weapons violation.
