A 40-year-old woman was arrested and charged with six counts of fraud after she stole over $60,000 from Good Samaritans under the pretense that she was suffering from cancer and required expensive treatment.
Nicole Elkabbass, who is a mother, faked cancer and began raising funds from concerned members of the public who generously donated to fund her treatment.
The investigators took interest in Nicole after she claimed that she had a deadly disease and began receiving large donations via an online fundraising page.
Following her deceptive act, the detectives asked the mother to provide sufficient medical evidence to prove that she’s really sick.
As the investigators found out, the 40-year-old had never been suffering from cancer and only claimed so in order to get money.
Ms. Elkabbass is now facing six counts of fraud and is set to appear at Margate Magistrates’ Court on May 2 after being charged on April 5.
Allegedly, she was wrongfully accepting donations under the pretense of being sick from February to August 2018.
“A Thanet woman has been charged with fraudulently accepting £45,350 in donations for an illness she allegedly did not have,” a Kent Police spokesman said.
“Nicole Elkabbass is charged with six counts of fraud following an investigation by detectives from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate.
“She is alleged to have falsely claimed to have required treatment for cancer in order to receive donations from members of the public, between February and August 2018.”
Another notorious cancer scammer is Belle Gibson, a 27-year-old who built a social media empire based on fake claims saying she cured brain cancer via alternative therapies which she presented in her cookbook.
Gibson was able to scam over 300,000 cancer patients and obtained hundreds of thousands from selling lies to the needy. Despite being threatened with jail time and fined $410,000 in 2017, the 27-year-old never apologized or returned a single stolen dollar up to date.
