A woman from China who goes by the surname Gao wanted to sell face masks due to the spread of Coronavirus but was scammed for 1.
66million yuan (184,270 pounds), over an empty box.
The 27-year-old Gao, who is from Xinmi city, has been running an online shop for five years in WeChat. She mostly sells cosmetic or beauty products and makes a living out of it.
With the spread of Coronavirus, the demand for face mask immediately increased. She appealed and started to look for suppliers who can provide her with the masks.
Luckily, she came across one retailer who claimed to have many masks and immediately sealed the deal. She blindly sent the funds of her face masks online, waiting for the product to reach her.
However, she instantly realized that she was scammed as the box she received was empty. Ms. Gao waited no more and quickly took help from the authorities and provided details of her situation.
The police took charge and immediately started the investigation, and it came to light that the phony retailer was assisted by five more people, who have been operating from the provinces of Fujian and Xinjian.
The investigation enabled the police to make a 1800km run from Xinmi to Yun Xiao County located in Fujian track the scammers down.
Ultimately, after three days, the police arrested four out of the five suspects. However, the family of the fifth suspect provided all the information that allows the police to arrest him as well.
The police reclaimed the entire money of Ms. Gao. Later, the Xinmi City police released the statement saying all the five culprits were arrested and is kept the Xinmi Public Security Bureau, in accordance with the law.
