A professional driver has died after crashing her jet-powered vehicle while trying to beat her own land speed record of 398 mph.
The horrific crash occurred on Tuesday around 4 pm while she controlled the car on a dry bed lake in Oregon.
36-year-old Jessi Combs held the title of ‘fastest woman on four wheels’ after setting the record of 398 miles per hour in 2013 at the North American Eagle Supersonic Speed Challenger.
Her partner, Terry Madden, wrote on Facebook which has been shared by North American Eagle.
“I have never loved or been loved by anyone as much as this amazing woman @thejessicombs she was truly my unicorn and I enjoyed every single minute that I had with her. She was the most amazing spirit that I have ever or will ever know,” he wrote.
“Unfortunately we lost her yesterday in a horrific accident, I was the first one there and trust me we did everything humanly possible to save her!! I’m not ok, but she is right here keeping me going – I made her a promise that if this didn’t go well that I would make sure and do good with it.”
He added: “We are finishing the documentary as she wished and the world will know the truth and her foundation will use those funds to do amazing things in this world and make her legacy live on properly.
“In the coming days her family and I will get the proper channels put together that you can then donate to that foundation.”
Madden concluded: “Love you all and thank you all for being such amazing friends to her, she dedicated her life to helping support others dreams and I promise I will continue that.”
One fan commented: “It will take time to find the right words…I have been following the NAE project since 2004. All of you have given so much and inspired so many… I too loved and appreciated what you were trying to accomplish.”
Another wrote: “Terry I’m sorry for your loss. Jessi R.I.P. you will be remembered as a beautiful, brave, speed loving, young woman that sadly died during chasing one of her dreams.”
