The Danakil Depression in Ethiopia is widely considered as one of the hottest places on the planet and the discovery of a fossil that dated back 3.2 million years has earned the area the additional title of ‘the cradle of humanity.’ And one adventurer decided that the arid vastness is also an ideal place to take a swim.

Bridget Thackwray, 25, was filmed swimming in a stunning natural pool set in the middle of the salt flats that extend to the horizon. The mesmerizing clip was filmed by her partner Topher Richwhite, 33, and together, they form the traveling duo from New Zealand called Expedition Earth.

The pair made their discovery, and it was a breathtaking find in the middle of what is a geological wonder in Ethiopia.

Bridget said: “The Danakil Depression is one of the hottest and lowest locations on the planet.

“The pool was minus 127 meters below sea level and was very, very salty.

“The area is also dangerous due to bandits from Eritrea.”

She added: “We had to have security personnel on our car as well as a guide, but they could not speak English well.”

The whole area is also known for its huge yellow acid, green, and sulfur lakes and is a popular tourist destination. Unfortunately, while beautiful, the place is also dangerous not just because of its geography but also because of its proximity to lawless areas.

It’s really ironic that the fact that it’s so inhospitable has protected it from the ravages of human activity. But that’s why there are people who are called adventurers because they travel to these dangerous locations and take the risks that most people can’t and they do this not just for themselves but for the benefit of those who can’t go.

The planet still has a lot of hidden gems out there and we can be thankful that there are still enough people who are willing to record themselves going there so that we can appreciate nature’s savage beauty even from afar.
