Taiwanese Woman Mocked And Called A ‘Corona Breather’ After Asking For Work


A Taiwanese woman, who is a permanent resident in Australia, was subjected to racist comments on Facebook after pleading with people for a job in her post.

As Gia Fan explained, she has been living as an expat in Australia for a decade. She has recently also embarked on a mission to find a new job in Sydney in order to earn enough money to send it to her family in China.

“I am looking for a job around Sydney that over $25 per hour doesn’t matter what job it is, I have a lot of hospitality and retail customer service experience, fluent both English and Chinese,” Fan wrote in her Facebook post.

“I have good references from all previous jobs. living in Australia for 10 years got my permanent resident. please help me, need money to send home for family as soon as possible.

“Anyone who can really helps me, recommend me to a job. I would like to pay some money for reward. Thank you!”

While her post didn’t sound like anything out of the ordinary, Fan was soon met with mockery, whereas internet users went as far as calling her a “corona breather.”

“Let’s just let this virus blow over first corona breather,” someone wrote in his reply.

“Can you find a cure for coronavirus?” another one teased.

The cruel online attack on the woman follows as several Chinese-dominated Sydney suburbs have turned into ghost towns amid coronavirus scare.

While areas such as Eastwood are typically overflowing with shoppers and visitors, the panic caused by social media has contributed to encouraging people to stay away from Chinese-populated areas.

In several online hoax warnings, people have even been warned that Chinese suburbs got hit by the deadly virus where in fact there were no confirmed cases.
