Courageous Woman Risked Her Own Life To Save A Koala From The Bushfire In Australia


As we all know, several parts of Australia have been destroyed in recent weeks due to deadly bushfires.

And the country battles soaring temperatures, strong winds, and it is the worst drought has seen in decades. 

The bushfires have caused huge loss to property and wildlife. According to reports, in New South Wales, more than 350 koalas have lost their lives in the wildfires raging near the Australian town of Port Macquarie, reports EcoWatch.

But, one koala was lucky to get a chance to survive, thanks to this courageous woman who risked her life to save him.

A video shared by 9News Australia, a koala heading towards a group of burning trees as fire engulfs the surrounding area. Soon after, a woman saw Koala and came in action. She runs into the flames to save the koala putting her own life at risk.

She wraps him in her own shirt off her back and carries him out of the fire. The Koala was in fear and crying in pain, she poured water on him before taking the poor animal to the hospital.

The woman, Toni Doherty, a New South Wales resident, Spoke to 9News, she said, “He just went straight into the flames, and I just jumped out of the car and went straight to him.” 

Doherty took Lewis (she named him) to the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital where he is recovering from very serious burns. On Wednesday, Doherty visited the hospital to meet Lewis and the hospital has reportedly informed 9news.com.au that Lewis’ health is stable now.

“His feet are completely burnt and he has burns to his chest and stomach. He has been bandaged and given antibiotics but will take a lot of looking after, if he pulls through,” said a spokesperson from the hospital to 9news.

If he survives, hopefully, he will be one of the lucky ones. As hundreds of other koalas who have been killed in the fires.

Wildlife apart, the Australian bushfires have killed six people and destroyed hundreds of homes so far, according to CBS News.

Doherty’s brave efforts have been praised on social media as people called her a hero. User SimSkepsi wrote, “My heart is so heavy watching this. Hearing its cries just makes me think of all the other animals that we can’t hear or didn’t hear. Thank goodness for the kind souls.”
