A mother-of-two will spend the next 40 years in jail for throwing her newborn babies in trash bags.
32-year-old Alyssa Dayvault from South Carolina was convicted of homicide by child abuse after she threw her two newborns in trash bags only moments after they were born.
According to reports, Dayvault hid her pregnancies in 2017 and 2018 from her family and friends. She delivered her babies alone at her home in North Myrtle Beach and threw them into trash bags.
The 32-year-old broke down in tears as she spoke to her family, boyfriend, and friends in the Horry county courtroom.
“I want to apologize – to my family, especially my daughters. I hope that one day they will be able to forgive me for what I’ve done,” Dayvault expressed, the Myrtle Beach Online reported.
“I never meant to do anything. I never harmed anyone. I made a horrible mistake.”
Dayvault, who has two other children, could not be tried for murder as prosecutors had no evidence that she suffocated or strangled her babies.
When asked why she threw the children, she said that her boyfriend did not want kids and she was scared of how her family would react.
“I wasn’t thinking. I wasn’t. I was too scared,” Dayvault cried.
Her boyfriend and his family were left heartbroken that someone they loved and trusted would lie and do unspeakable things.
Dayvault’s lawyer asked Judge John to reconsider the 40-year sentence as she suffers from mental illness and had no criminal record.
But the judge refused and said: “I did not take into consideration in any shape, matter or form the fact he defendant was not present.
“That doesn´t affect the sentence at all. It is the facts and evidence presented.”
