A 22-year-old woman from Edinburgh was on holiday in Vietnam last year when she became seriously ill.
Mekala Osborne was traveling around Asia in September last year when she started suffering from a sore throat and she tried to cure it with Strepsils.
She was then diagnosed with pneumonia and after that, her health deteriorated and her family was told she only had a five percent chance of survival.
She was put in an induced coma and transferred to a hospital in Singapore for treatment and then came back to Scotland in November.
After spending 117 days in the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, she was moved to the Astley Ainslie Rehabilitation Hospital in March.
She fought for her life for six months and is now finally able to sit up without anyone’s help and can have a shower on her own.
Family friend Dave Martin wrote on Facebook: “Well how’s about this for an Easter rising. Yes, Mekala is sitting up for the first time today. And even managed to have a shower.”
“There is nothing stopping this wee warrior. She has seen the light at the end of the tunnel and is determined to reach it as soon as possible. What a great achievement. So lets cheer her on.”
Mekala has defied odds as she only had a five percent chance of survival and was fighting for her life for more than six months.
The brave woman is now able to sit up unaided and recovering well.
Earlier, when she was moving to the Astley Ainslie Rehabilitation Hospital on March 19 after spending 117 days in the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, she shared a video for her fans telling them she is doing much better.
She said in the video: “I’m away to the Astley Ainslie to get myself walking, get everything sorted and I’ll be back dancing in the club in no time.”
