A 70-year-old woman died after falling 200 feet over the rim of Grand Canyon, marking 4th death within a month, according to Grand Canyon officials.

The visitor had been walking about 200 to 300 feet off a trail along the edge of South Rim about a mile east of Mather Point.

Park rangers received a call after 1 pm that the woman needed immediate assistance west of a popular overlook Pipe Creek Vista.

Grand Canyon spokesperson John Quinley said: “She fell before we could undertake a rescue,” adding that the circumstances of the call for help were not clear.

Quinley also said that the 70-year-old fell between the starting point for the South Kaibab Trail and Mather Point.

The park’s rescue team retrieved her body.

The name of the visitor was being withheld until her family can be informed of the incident. Park officials also did not immediately release her hometown.

The Coconino County Medical Examiner and the National Park Service will investigate her death.

Three other deaths are still being investigated, two of which occurred outside the park.

On April 3, a 67-year-old man from California fell 400 feet from the edge of the South Rim in Grand Canyon Village.

Another tourist from Macau, China also fell to his death while trying to take a photo at the Grand Canyon West’s Eagle Point near the Skywalk located on the Hualapai Reservation.

A body of a Japanese visitor was also found in a wooded area south of Grand Canyon Village but away from the rim.

Park officials revealed about 12 people die every year within the park.
