A woman from Wisconsin wants to make sure no child feels different, so she decided to create look-alike dolls for kids with disabilities.
Amy Jandrisevits makes dolls that look like their adorable owners, coming in all forms and shapes, with unique bodily features and conditions.
She sews dolls for her non-profit ‘A Doll Like Me’ and brings joy to children from all over the world.
Amy made her first ‘Doll Like Me’ around five years ago when her friend’s child, a trans, started transitioning. When her friend shared the photo online, people began asking the kindhearted woman if she could also make one for their children, according to Today.
“It is a really hard sell to tell a kid, ‘You are perfect the way you are,’ and to build self-esteem that way but never offer them anything that looks like them,” she expressed.
“We are going to change the story.”
In an interview with people, Amy said: “I am invited to such an intimate part of families’ lives. I love that connection.”
Because Amy is a stay-at-home mother, each doll is custom made at her living room table.
The former pediatric oncology social worker and avid doll collector decided to combine her passion for doll craft and social work.
One Facebook user commented: “That is the sweetest and most adorable most thoughtful most kind thing you are a very special lady.”
Another wrote: “My friend Cathy Diggs did the same for her foster children in the 80s.it truly makes a difference in the life of a child.
Blessings on you!”
A third shared: “My sister had to wear glasses when a toddler. Mom embroided eyeglasses onto her stuffed animals and also added them to a bear cake for her birthday.”
