According to authorities, the three left Adlesic’s hand behind to make sure the disability was permanent. However, it was recovered by police and reattached.

Days before the incident, Adlesic’s partner also searched online on how artificial hands work, prosecutors said.

Adlesic claimed innocence during the trial, saying: “No one wants to be crippled. My youth has been destroyed. I lost my hand at the age of 20. Only I know how it happened.”

One internet user commented: “Poor lady. I can only assume she was bullied into it, because it is not something a sane person would do to themselves.”

Another wrote: “Poor woman. She must have been desperate for money to do that!”

A third added: “Deeply sad case, I do not understand how a person can value money more than their hand.”
