A 22-year-old woman who cut her hand off with a saw to claim money has been imprisoned for insurance fraud.
Julija Adlesic from Slovenia planned with her boyfriend to cut her hand at their home in Ljubljana in early 2019.
However, investigators discovered that the couple had signed contracts with five insurance companies last year.
The court heard that Adlesic stood to collect more than €1m, over half to be paid right away, after signing contacts with five providers.
She said she was sawing branches when she injured herself.
Adlesic was found guilty of attempted insurance fraud and was given two years in prison. Her boyfriend was sentenced to three years behind bars while his father got a 1-year suspended sentence.
According to authorities, the three left Adlesic’s hand behind to make sure the disability was permanent. However, it was recovered by police and reattached.
Days before the incident, Adlesic’s partner also searched online on how artificial hands work, prosecutors said.
Adlesic claimed innocence during the trial, saying: “No one wants to be crippled. My youth has been destroyed. I lost my hand at the age of 20. Only I know how it happened.”
Judge Marjeta Dvornik said: “We believe the sentences are fair and appropriate, and will serve their purpose.”
One internet user commented: “Poor lady. I can only assume she was bullied into it, because it is not something a sane person would do to themselves.”
Another wrote: “Poor woman. She must have been desperate for money to do that!”
A third added: “Deeply sad case, I do not understand how a person can value money more than their hand.”
