The elderly woman who has been accused of coughing at a baby on purpose worked a job at a school district according to the reports.
The bizarre incident occurred in San Jose, California, where a woman, who appears to be in her 60s, approached and coughed on a baby that was at a yogurt shop with his mother.
According to Enrique Garcia of the San Jose Police Department, the authorities can’t share additional information about the suspect until an arrest warrant is issued.
“The preliminary investigation revealed the suspect was upset the female was not maintaining proper social distancing so the suspect removed her face mask, got close to the baby’s face, and coughed two to three times,” Garcia confirmed last month.
“We can’t release the names of suspects until there is a warrant for their arrest, they were booked into jail, or they were issued a criminal citation.”
As seen in the footage shared by the San Jose Police Department, the woman removed her face mask and approached a stroller with a baby inside before coughing all over him.
According to Mireya Mora, the mum of the 1-year-old toddler in question, the incident wasn’t an accident and the elderly woman coughed on her child deliberately.
“She did it on purpose. It’s not like she coughed on accident ‘Oh cough, cough.’ No, she purposely coughed on my son’s face,” Mora said in an interview with ABC News.
“It happened so quick I was in shock. She got close, she took off her mask, and she coughed three times super hard on my son’s face.”
Following the incident, Oak Grove School District confirmed that the suspect had been working for them. While they didn’t release the woman’s name, they claimed that she is no longer an employee of the school district.
“We want to inform our community that the District employee who was alleged to have engaged in this conduct is no longer an employee of our District,” the Oak Grove School District statement read.
“The Oak Grove School District’s highest priority is the safety of our students and the well-being of all of the children in the community we serve. We do not tolerate conduct from any employee that compromises any child’s safety.”
