What would you do if you had to choose between your partner and your dog? Well, a woman faced this situation and she made a decision which she found best for her.
Liz Haslam tied the knot with the person who was the love of her life. She fell in love with Mike when she was just 16 and after finishing high school they got married. They started their new life moved into a two-bedroom farmhouse in Barnham, Suffolk.
One day her husband Mike asked Liz to choose between him and their dog. “My husband said: It’s either the dogs or me.”
She said: “I haven’t seen or heard from him since. I thought after 25 years, he should know giving up the dogs was not what my intentions were.’’
“He’d got to the point where he’d had enough and wanted to slow down. But I wasn’t prepared to give it up. So he decided to go.’’
The actual reason behind this is that Liz founded Bedsforbullies, a bull terrier sanctuary and offered home to dozens of dogs.
She explained: “My son’s grown up and is old enough to look after himself,” she said. “My passion for dogs was far too great.”
“He knew from the moment that we got together what I was all about.’’
“I don’t know what he expected. He told me he was going and had sorted out some other accommodation so he packed his bags. Before we split up he kept saying ‘I do not want to be doing this, I want to get a passport and go away.’ I said that isn’t going to happen so we might as well go our separate ways, which we did.”
It is a very demanding job, you can’t have a day off,” she said.
“I don’t sit down till 11.30 at night so you can’t just go on holiday. And I can’t turn around and say I am not going to do it any more, it is my responsibility, I took the dogs in I can’t just stop.
“I have taken them in to look after them, I save dogs from all around the world that have been shot and badly injured.”
Now Liz had to find premises after her landlord gave her the notice to leave the home.
She said: “I have re-homed so many dogs and now I am looking for a home. But I have chosen to do this. I love it.”
