Dr. Zhao Qin of Shiyan Maternity and Child Health Care Hospital said she had urged Xiao Ju to keep her child when she went to the hospital again this year. She explained that it might be her last chance at motherhood.

But the pregnant woman insisted on terminating the pregnancy, leaving Dr. Zhao and her colleagues no choice but to perform the patient’s 17th abortion in 6 years.

Most young people in China know very little about sexual health as most schools don’t teach sex education.

According to leading Chinese sexologist Peng Xiaohui, 99 percent of Chinese adults are not informed on the topic, and 44 percent of Chinese university students have no sex education at all.

Xiao Ju and her boyfriend reportedly have not used any contraception for six years.

She added: “Her uterus was also badly scarred.”

Dr. Zhao said she urged the patient to keep her baby. “If you don’t have to have this abortion, then keep this baby, because it may be very, very difficult for you to get pregnant again.”

According to NHS, having an abortion won’t affect the woman’s chances of becoming pregnant again but there could be small risks of fertility issues.

Multiple abortions can increase the risk of life-threatening problems for future pregnancies.
