A 27-year-old woman has been told by doctors she might never be able to have children anymore as her uterus lining was ‘as thin as a piece of paper.
The young woman, known as Xiao Ju, underwent 17 abortions. She has been in a relationship with her boyfriend for six years and they don’t use birth control.
The patient told the doctor she wasn’t ready to get married and wasn’t capable of raising a child, so she chose to terminate all 17 pregnancies, according to the report.
In China, babies born out of wedlock will not be issued an ID. This means they won’t be entitled to state benefits and the right to receive an education.
Dr. Zhao Qin of Shiyan Maternity and Child Health Care Hospital said she had urged Xiao Ju to keep her child when she went to the hospital again this year. She explained that it might be her last chance at motherhood.
But the pregnant woman insisted on terminating the pregnancy, leaving Dr. Zhao and her colleagues no choice but to perform the patient’s 17th abortion in 6 years.
Most young people in China know very little about sexual health as most schools don’t teach sex education.
According to leading Chinese sexologist Peng Xiaohui, 99 percent of Chinese adults are not informed on the topic, and 44 percent of Chinese university students have no sex education at all.
Xiao Ju and her boyfriend reportedly have not used any contraception for six years.
While examining the latest procedure, doctor Zhao realized the severity of Xiao Ju’s physical condition. She said: “I found her uterus lining to be critically thin, like a piece of paper, due to the repeated abortions she had had.”
She added: “Her uterus was also badly scarred.”
Dr. Zhao said she urged the patient to keep her baby. “If you don’t have to have this abortion, then keep this baby, because it may be very, very difficult for you to get pregnant again.”
But Xiao Ju’s reply was that she didn’t plan to get married and couldn’t raise the child. She also insisted for the abortion to take place.
According to NHS, having an abortion won’t affect the woman’s chances of becoming pregnant again but there could be small risks of fertility issues.
Multiple abortions can increase the risk of life-threatening problems for future pregnancies.
