Theresa Kachindamoto is making headlines after she became chief of a town in Africa.
The youngest daughter of a previous chief, Kachindamoto moved to a new town where she served as a secretary for almost 30 years.
Because of her awareness of the everyday problems in the place and her generosity, people voted for her to become the next chief.
She was surprised when she found out that the locals wanted her to be the next chief but she promised to do good things for the town.
The youngest of 12 children, Kachindamoto is now the chief of Monkey Bay, Malawi.
As soon as she became chief, her first order was going to change the lives of young girls in the area.
“Child marriage was made illegal in Malawi in 2015, but many families still practice it. This is due to the fact that it is allowed with parental permission. Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world, and many families allow their child to marry older men purely because they can’t afford to keep them,” according to Happiest.
”They feel they have no choice and would prefer their daughter to be alive, even if it means she is married at an age as young as 12.”
According to a study conducted by the UN, more than half of Malawi’s girls were married before they turn 18. Many of them were forced to give birth at such young ages, causing health problems and complications because of their small bodies.
That is why Kachindamoto annulled 850 child marriages and also sent them back to school. Thanks to her decision, many families were relieved.
“I don’t care, I don’t mind. I’ve said whatever, we can talk, but these girls will go back to school,” she said.
In addition, she also pays for the tuition and other fees for some students who couldn’t afford to go to school. She is such a kindhearted and incredible woman!
