A woman has discovered that she spent the last 20 years with a felony charge to her name after she forgot to return a VHS tape of Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
Caron McBride claims that a roommate rented the VHS tape back in 1999 from Movie Place in Norman.
But when the item was never returned, she was charged with felony embezzlement of a rented property.
The store eventually closed in 2008 but the felony charge remained.
McBride said that she only found out about the charge last year when she tied the knot in Texas and tried to change her name.
She also fears that the charge could be the reason why she has missed out on many job opportunities.
Speaking to Fox 25, McBride said: “I went to change my driver’s license, during this COVID thing you had to make an appointment, and so, I sent them an email [and] they sent me an email and they told me…that I had an issue in Oklahoma and this was the reference number for me to call this number and I did.”
She was then directed to the Cleveland County District Office, who told her about the charge.
“The first thing she told me was felony embezzlement, so, I thought I was gonna have a heart attack,” McBride said.
“She told me it was over the VHS tape and I had to make her repeat it because I thought, ‘This is insane. This girl is kidding me, right?”
“She wasn’t kidding,” McBride said.
She then blamed her roommate who had two daughters and possibly rented the VHS tape for them.
“I have never watched that show in my entire life, just not my cup of tea,” she added. “Meanwhile, I’m a wanted felon for a VHS tape.”
Fortunately, the charge was dismissed after the case was reviewed by the DA’s office.
McBride says she experienced several problems in the past, including being let go from many jobs without any explanation.
“This is why…because when they ran my criminal background check, all they’re seeing is those two words: felony embezzlement,” McBride said.
McBride is now looking for an attorney to help her expunged her record.
“It’s a serious issue,” she expressed. “It’s caused me and my family a lot of heartache financially because of the positions I’ve lost because of those two words. Something’s got to give.”
