A woman volunteered to breastfeed 20 babies from a maternity ward in Kabul, Afghanistan after mothers, nurses, and two newborns passed away in a gun attack.
According to the health ministry, 24 people were killed in the shooting incident at the Doctors Without Borders maternity ward.
Feroza Younis Omar, a mother of a 14-month-old baby, volunteered to breastfeed around 20 babies who were left without mothers.
“All of us have been damaged by criminals who are destroying humanity in Afghanistan. I am one of those,” she expressed.
Three armed men pretending to be cops stormed the maternity unit and threw grenades before opening fire. They got into hours of a shootout with security forces and the attackers were shot dead later.
Security forces carried babies from the unit, some of them wrapped in blood-soaked cloth.
One of the survivors, Khadija, said the intensive care ward was full of bullets and smoke but she and her child managed to survive.
After the attack, at least 20 babies were left without mothers and caretakers. Relatives of other babies whose mothers were killed were waiting for updates on what will happen to the children, the New York Times reported.
Dr. Jannat Gul Askarzada, the head doctor of the hospital, said to reporters: “Twenty babies have been brought to Ataturk Hospital. One of them was sent to the children’s health hospital for orthopedic treatment.”
Twitter users praised Feroza Younis Omar for her incredible efforts.
On Twitter user wrote: “Masoom Musakhail. That is the Humanity to feed the baby of martyred Mothers.”
Another internet user said: “Wow. That is no easy task. As a mom who breastfed all my babies I can tell you that is amazing. And painful.”
A third added: “The give of immunity against disease especially in these times cannot be underestimated. I just hope her body can handle the toll.”
