A woman with a colostomy bag is on a mission to break the stigma around the condition after a 10-year-old boy with the pouch took his own life because he was bullied.

30-year-old Annie Jenkins has been living with a colostomy bag for almost three years ever since her large intestine was removed due to an illness.
After she learned about Seven Bridges, a 10-year-old Kentucky schoolboy who hanged himself in his room after being bullied over his colostomy bag, the woman decided it was time to speak out in order to urge parents to teach their kids about the ‘invisible’ condition.
“What this boy must have gone through is unthinkable! We need to raise awareness but most of all EDUCATE,” Annie wrote in her Facebook post.
“Us ostomates are not aliens, we are not bully-victims, we do not smell, we are no different to anyone else. We just lack organs others have and, put simply, we s*** into a bag that’s stuck to our stomach rather that in a toilet.
“If you’re a parent then please educate your child, not just about stomas but about invisible illness! It affects so many.”
In an attempt to break the stigma around stoma bags, Annie launched a campaign during which she claimed her quality of life was amazing despite living with the pouch.
“Everyone thinks if you wear a stoma bag you must stink but this is a shocking view and shows the uneducated world we live in,” Annie said.
“There are some days I hate it myself but my quality of life now is amazing. I’m no longer on painkillers or in a lot of pain. I don’t spend hours and hours on the toilet anymore.
“There are some days when I have to stay close to home but this is one in 30 as opposed to 29 out of 30 it was before.”
As the mother-of-one added, she still receives hateful messages on the internet despite having lots of loyal supporters.
“I’ve had a few messages telling me that I’m vile and that I don’t deserve to have children but there has been far more support than hate,” Annie explained.
“I’m just going to keep trying to raise as much awareness as possible and hopefully prevent a repeat of what happened in America.”
