St Louis Police are searching for a woman who was caught on video beating a sheriff’s deputy with her own baton.
The video shows the woman hitting the officer in the head with the baton after she was told that she couldn’t go inside a gas station convenience store without a face mask.
St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department said that the incident occurred at the Shell gas station at 721 North Tucker Boulevard on Christmas Day.
According to the sheriff’s deputy, she was working at the gas station when a woman entered the convenience store without a mask.
“The victim stated the suspect became belligerent when the victim informed the suspect that the suspect could not enter the business without a mask,” St. Louis Metropolitan Police said in a statement.
Video from the inside of the convenience store shows the woman talking to the deputy.
The irate woman then pushed her out of the store before punching her. She then grabbed the deputy’s baton and hit her in the head, resulting in a concussion.
The injured deputy even tried to follow the woman to the parking lot and she used the baton to strike the attacker before the red vehicle sped away.
Emergency services rushed to the scene but the deputy refused medical assistance.
St. Louis Sheriff Vernon Betts told KSDK: “My first response is to express concern for my deputy who suffered head injuries but is expected to recover.
“Secondly, this incident points to the danger law enforcement officers face every day. This individual made a serious mistake and we are working with the St. Louis Police Department to apprehend and bring charges against this attacker. Thirdly, this pandemic is not over and you must wear a mask when in public.”
