At the age of 18, Katie Davis was the senior class president and the homecoming queen of their school. She also had a boyfriend, designer clothes, a yellow convertible, and her parents encouraged her to go to college to have a solid education.

Would you expect her to trade that lifestyle in Tennessee for a different life in Uganda?

After she graduated high school, Davis served in Uganda for a year-long mission trip. It was just a temporary trip but she decided to stay for good.

Davis founded Amazima Ministries in 2008 and its mission is to “live out the love of Jesus by educating and empowering the people of Uganda and the communities we serve.”

Aside from founding the ministry, she also felt called to adopt children that she went on to have 13 Ugandan girls.

She said that one of the greatest lessons she learned about love was from the foster and adoption process.

“I’m sure there is truth in the stories many tell of that moment they saw their child for the first time and knew instantly that God had ordained him to be theirs, and fell in love. But I think so much more often, the action of love precedes the actual feeling,” she told TODAY.

That kind of perspective of love also influenced her view not only of herself as a mom but also as a wife. In 2015, she tied the knot with Benji Majors.

“My husband’s love is just another way God has chosen to pour [out] His extravagant love on me, another constant reminder that He rejoices over me, and over each one of our daughters,” she wrote on her blog.

“I watch them come alive under the loving gaze of their new father, I hear the delight and the certainty in their voices as they call ‘Dad.’”
