The winner of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize has been announced.
The World Food Programme (WFP) received the Nobel Peace Prize for its incredible efforts in combatting global hunger.
The humanitarian organization topped more than 300 candidates, including Russian dissident Alexei Navalny and activist Greta Thunberg.
There were 318 contenders – 107 organizations and 211 individuals.
According to reports, judges passed over the World Health Organization (WHO) for this year’s prize amid criticism of the way it handled the coronavirus pandemic.
The panel said the COVID-19 pandemic has added to the hunger confronted by millions of people.
Reiss-Anderson said: “With this year’s award, the (committee) wishes to turn the eyes of the world to the millions of people who suffer from or face the threat of hunger.
“The World Food Programme plays a key role in multilateral co-operation in making food security an instrument of peace,” Reiss-Anderson continued.
“The World Food Programme contributes daily to advancing the fraternity of nations mentioned in Alfred Nobel’s will.”
The prize also comes with a $1.1million (10-milion krona) cash award.
The enormous award will be given out at a ceremony in Oslo on December 10, the death anniversary of Alfred Nobel.
In an interview with BBC, WFP head David Beasley said he was surprised after the announcement.
“I was literally for the first time in my life without words,” he said. “To receive this award is a recognition to the men and women at the World Food Programme who put their lives on the line every day for the struggling, suffering people around the world.
“So I hope this is a signal and a message that the World Food Programme is a role model and that we all have got to do more.”
