Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton have paid tribute to Prince Philip after he passed away at Windsor Castle aged 99.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s official website for the Royal Foundation featured a large black-and-white photo of the Duke of Edinburgh and an official statement from the palace announcing his death.
The image shows Prince Philip dressed in a suit and smiling at the camera.
“It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh,” the couple posted online.
“His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.
“Further announcements will be made in due course. Visit www.royal.uk to find out more.”
The Royal Foundation charity supports the work of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, whose recent projects revolve around supporting front liners and conservation.
William, the president of BAFTA, was set to feature on April 10 to talk about the craft of film-making and filming in lockdown. But it was announced that he will not participate in the programming in light of his grandfather’s passing.
Prince Philip was BAFTA’s first president, serving from 1959 to 1965.
In a statement after news of Prince Philip’s death, BAFTA said: “’In light of the Duke of Edinburgh’s passing, the Duke of Cambridge will no longer be part of BAFTA programming this weekend.
“Our thoughts are with the royal family, to whom we offer our deepest sympathy at this time.”
Prince Philip’s funeral, which will be held at St. George’s Chapel, will be televised around the world on Saturday.
