A wife lost her memory after she suffered stroke and seizure while giving birth to her son.
With her memory gone, Camre Curto had no idea who her husband was. But for some reason, she understands that Steve was a very special person as she later said to him, “I don’t know who you are, but I know I love you.”
Those six words have inspired the couple to write a book about their extraordinary love story, from their romantic start to their heart-wrenching setbacks.
Speaking about ‘But I Know I Love You,’ Camre told Good Morning America: “Everything in the book is a memory of what we’ve gone through and what I’ve missed.
“I enjoy [reading] it very much, but … sometimes it’s hard for me because it shows me everything that we have been through and that I don’t have inside of me.”
Their challenges started when 31-year-old Camre gave birth to Gavin, now 7. After suffering from undiagnosed preeclampsia, a complication characterized by high blood pressure, she went into eclampsia.
Weighing over 4lbs, Gavin was born via emergency C-section but Camre was placed in a medically induced coma.
When she woke up, both her short-term and long-term memories were gone. She didn’t know who she was, even the fact that she had just given birth.
Steve told GMA that his wife’s recovery was slow and that she had to relearn some tasks such as brushing her teeth, getting dressed, and cooking.
“We were sitting on the couch and she told me, ‘I don’t know who you are but I know I love you,”” he shared. “That has always stuck with me. That has been the driving force behind everything.”
Thanks to loving Steve and occupational therapist Jessica Smith, Camre has now relearned many simple tasks. She can also remember her husband and Gavin.
“With my husband and son with me, that is what is getting me through all this. Every time I see Gave and Steve, there’s a huge smile on my face and inside me,” Camre told GMA.
“The love of family is what means the most and what is getting me through the day.”
Steve added: “One of the things that she always tells me [is] that it’s extremely difficult to not remember your son’s first steps or the first time he said, ‘Mama,’ because that’s really what moms talk about sometimes. So we role play conversations and do them over and over.”
The couple’s book, But I Know I Love You, was published on their 4th wedding anniversary.
“This is the true-life account of one man’s determination to create a family with the woman he loves even though she doesn’t have a clue who he is, or even they have a child,” the book’s description reads.
