Reading about and hearing from those who had to battle against a terminal illness, we know how terrifying and exhausting it must be to keep on fighting.
They don’t know whether the disease would be cured, or if it would come back later.
Even in the midst of such difficult process, however, Kate and Mike never lost hope. In fact, this story about them will make you realize that nothing is impossible with the help from people.
Back in 2014, Mike was diagnosed with an acute lymphoblastic leukemia back in 2014.
Instead of giving up, however, Mike and his soon-to-be wife Kate vowed to do everything they could to raise the money to receive the treatment.
Kate first started the donation campaign called #Shake4Mike, which raised enough money for Mike to receive the transplant on his 30th birthday.
Thankfully, he was cancer-free. Thrilled, the couple got married in June, 2015, and could not be more happier.
“My favorite part was the ceremony, our hands remained tightly clasped together throughout – to finally get to that day was such an achievement,” said Kate in her interview with Daily Mail.
At that time, they had no idea that they would soon receive more tragic news.
Less than a year after they got married, Mike was told that the cancer had returned. And it had already spread to other parts of his body.
Unfortunately, doctors ran out of treatment options. They said that the only one that had any chance of saving Mike would be to fly over to Pennsylvania and become a part of the $400,000 trial treatment called Car T-cell therapy.
Once again, Kate and Mike decided to fight. But, there was no way that they could afford to pay for such expensive trial. So, Kate turned to what had worked previously. She created a page called #Donate4mike, and explained her husband’s situation to people.
“We can’t go down without a fight. You hear of miracles all the time, they are rare but they happen,” wrote Kate.
And, people responded with tremendous support. In fact, Kate and Mike received over $150,000 in just one day.
Within two days, they reached the impossible goal of raising the entire money for the treatment. What Kate created became the largest successful crowdfunding campaign in U.K.
With the money, they immediately went to the states to become part of the trial.
How is Mike now? According to two recent biopsies, he’s now cancer free.
“We are absolutely over the moon and enjoying every moment together. We have more tests ahead but, right now, we couldn’t be happier,” said Kate.
And Kate actually didn’t stop when Mike got in the trial. She realized the power of social media, and wanted to give back to the community by helping others who may be in a similar situation as Mike. So, she created another campaign called #Donate4Cells in order to raise money for the charity Above & Beyond.
Be sure to visit the page to support others who may be in desperate need of help!
This truly miraculous story of Kate and Mike shows that sometimes, people create their own miracle.
