Just like the depth of an ocean is immeasurable, the species of fish, plants and other marine animals found in these oceans are numberless.

For long it was believed that there is only one kind of manta ray fish. But the scientists later categorized the giant fish into two types based on their size: the giant manta ray, maritime animal variety, and the reef manta way, beach front variety.

Giant manta rays are amongst the biggest fishes spreading up to 29 feet or 8.8 meters. These fish like other giant fishes like whale shark, lolling shark, blue whales, etc. feed on tiny fishes.

They swim and keep their mouth open simultaneously, filtering microscopic fishes and other nourishment from the ocean.

Giant mantas have a certain type of folds called cephalic flaps which direct more water with nourishment inside their mouths.

Giant manta rays are found in subtropical, tropical and calm waters. They may visit cold waters for a short period as well. The fish have one of the least minimal fertility with producing one offspring in a few years.

The fish are also lone creatures. Because these fish are unevenly distributed all over the world’s oceans, research on their lives is not adequate.

Due to their long gestation period and production of one offspring in several years, the giant manta ray does not reproduce rapidly.

But recently this beautiful animal’s fishing has increased due to its demand in Asian markets. The species comes in the list of threatened animals.

The spotting of these fish is very rare as giant manta rays are always moving. But in this video shot by Damian Young beautifully captures the giant creature. The video was shot while he was on a boat trip in the Raja Ampat archipelago, Indonesia.
