The White House has defended Biden’s swift approach to changes by saying the president is merely trying to fix what Trump broke.
As Chief of Staff Ron Klain insisted in his tweet, the 46th US president is taking executive action not to avoid going through the legislative process but to undo the damage done by Trump’s actions as soon as possible.
“We are not taking executive action in lieu of legislation: we are taking executive action to fix what Trump broke in the executive branch, and to keep the President’s commitments to use his power — within appropriate limits — to make progress on four crises,” Klain wrote.
The comment followed shortly after a New York Times editorial in which the publication asked Biden to “ease up” on signing executive orders.
In an apparent jab at the president’s swift actions following his inauguration on January 20, the NYT suggested his orders were a “flawed substitute for legislation.
”Lashing back at critics and defending the president was also White House Communications Director Kate Bedingfield who claimed Biden was simply reversing “the most egregious actions” of the Trump administration.
“As the NYT ed board criticizes President Biden this am for taking swift executive action to reverse the most egregious actions of the Trump Admin, I can’t help but recall that during the primary they encouraged voters to consider what a president could accomplish through exec Action,” she expressed.
“So my question is which actions that the President took to reverse Donald Trump’s executive orders would they have liked to see him not pursue? Of course we are also pursuing our agenda through legislation. It’s why we are working so hard to get the American Rescue Plan passed, for starters!”
While the White House stands firmly behind Biden’s executive orders, not everyone is on board with the president’s way of handling crucial affairs concerning the entire country.
“As recently as October, now-President Biden said you can’t legislate by executive action unless you’re a dictator. In one week he signed more than 30 unilateral actions and working Americans are getting short shrift,” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said.
